Animal research
can involve some risk. Many people are allergic to rodents
and rabbits. Other animals, such as monkeys, sheep and
wild animals, can harbor infectious agents that can
infect people. Animal bites and scratches can inflict
serious physical injuries. Finally, the use of toxic,
radioactive, or infectious materials in animals requires
proper care to avoid injury to the researcher, animal
care technician, or the general public.
The following
information is available in the Occupational Health
area:
- Health Services — If you
have personal health concerns related to your use
of animals or you become ill while working at HMS,
you should see an occupational physician familiar
with the research program.
- Risk Assessment —
With your supervisor's assistance, complete the LMA
Risk Assessment Survey upon employment and when your
job description changes.
- Injury on the Job
- Zoonoses — Zoonoses are
diseases that humans can contract from animals. Several
common research species may harbor zoonotic agents.
- Toxic & Infectious Materials —
Register and receive advance approval to use toxic,
radioactive, or infectious materials in animals.
