Investigators wishing to import rodents into Harvard Medical Area Animal Facilities from sources not under care of the ARCM veterinary staff must comply with quarantine requirements. Candidates for housing in Specific Pathogen Free facilities animals will be temporarily housed for an eight weeks' evaluation period in ARCM quarantine rooms. Release from quarantine depends on the results of tests conducted during this period. Eligibility for quarantine depends on the health status of the animal facility at the donor institution, the availability of quarantine space and the availability of housing space in the destination designated in the quarantine application. An approved Animal Experimentation Protocol is a prerequisite for use of these facilities as is an established financial relationship between the investigator and the ARCM.

The quarantine process exists to ensure, to the greatest extent practicable, that animals entering the barrier are free of excluded rodent pathogens.
