a)
Institutional affiliation, that is the institution
through which the PI's grant funds are processed (e.g.
HMS, HSPH, BWH, BIDMC)
b)
Location where the animals are housed
The direct per diem rate is the charge generated
by the costs to the ARCM for labor, services and supplies
and materials used to care for animals in our facilities.
The animal
program costs related to direct animal care include
labor costs for animal care and veterinary staffs, disease
diagnosis and disease surveillance costs, administration
and AAALAC accreditation; materials costs for the calculation
of the direct rate include animal food, bedding, protective
clothing for animal facilities and emergency veterinary
supplies.
The indirect
animal per diem rate is a charge calculated to recover,
to the institution owning the facility, the costs of maintaining
the animal space including, heat, cooling, maintenance,
construction costs and debt service. This indirect rate
is not related to the Federal institutional indirect rate
negotiated with the NIH.
HMS, HSPH,
HSDM and all other investigators are charged the total
(direct and indirect) rate for animals housed in HMS or
HSPH space.
BWH investigators
using BWH space (Thorn, MCP, LMRC etc) are charged the
direct rate by the ARCM. The BWH recovers indirect charges,
calculated by the BWH, independently of the ARCM but based
on the amount of all animal-related charges for purchase
and services rendered by the ARCM to the particular investigator.

a.
For animals housed at HIM Investigators
are charged by ARCM via a blanket purchase order mechanism
administered by BIDMC Research Administration. BIDMC Research
Administration then bills investigators for the housing
costs at HIM.
b.
For animals housed in other ARCM managed facilities
Investigators are charged the total rate via an
investigator generated purchase order.
