COMS is an acronym that stands for the Committee on Microbiological Safety. Its role is to advise investigators on the methods of safe use of infectious materials in research and to oversee the safe use of such materials. The ARCM is the final arbiter of the feasiblity of implementation of the proposed use of these agents within its facilities.

  • Investigators whose experiments require use of microbiological agents (or cell lines that may contain those agents) in animals have a positive duty to obtain prior approval from COMS for that use.
  • The investigators are likewise bound to make arrangements prior to use in animals with the ARCM for the safe use, equipment sanitation and disposal of infectious materials.
