- IACUC
(Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee)
The Standing Committee on Animals at Harvard. This committee,
appointed by the Dean of the Medical School, is responsible
for overseeing the humane care of and animal use at HMS.
The IACUC meets once a month to review new and amended research
protocols, develop policy, and investigate allegations of
animal misuse. The IACUC also conducts a semi-annual review
of all animal housing and use locations and the animal care
program.
- Environmental
Health and Safety (EH&S) All use of toxic
or radioactive materials in animals requires approval by
the EHS in advance.
- Committee
on Microbiological Safety (COMS) Use of infectious
agents in animals, including the use of recombinant viral
vectors for gene therapy, requires approval by COMS in advance.
COMS approval is also necessary for the production of transgenic
animals.
- Reporting
Animal Abuse Do you suspect research animals
are being misused or mistreated? Please report any incidents
to the responsible institutional official: Dr. Arthur Lage
at alage@hms.harvard.edu.
All reports will be treated confidentially.
