  • IACUC (Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee) — The Standing Committee on Animals at Harvard. This committee, appointed by the Dean of the Medical School, is responsible for overseeing the humane care of and animal use at HMS. The IACUC meets once a month to review new and amended research protocols, develop policy, and investigate allegations of animal misuse. The IACUC also conducts a semi-annual review of all animal housing and use locations and the animal care program.
  • Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) — All use of toxic or radioactive materials in animals requires approval by the EHS in advance.
  • Committee on Microbiological Safety (COMS) — Use of infectious agents in animals, including the use of recombinant viral vectors for gene therapy, requires approval by COMS in advance. COMS approval is also necessary for the production of transgenic animals.
  • Reporting Animal Abuse — Do you suspect research animals are being misused or mistreated? Please report any incidents to the responsible institutional official: Dr. Arthur Lage at alage@hms.harvard.edu. All reports will be treated confidentially.
