Shipping Mice from the Harvard Medical Area

1. Shipping animals is the investigators' responsibility. Investigators should contact shippers and make their financial arrangements with them directly. The ARCM will not pay these charges for you.

Carriers/couriers that presently ship animals.

2. Animals should be shipped early in the week (Monday or Tuesday) to avoid losses due to long stays in inhospitable perhaps unheated or un-cooled airport warehouses. In planning animal movements, you should avoid shipping in proximity to national and other de facto holidays.

3. Supplies such as shipping boxes with viewing windows, dividers, water pouches, gel packs may be required and these can be obtained commercially. (Boxes with opaque covers may be opened on arrival in foreign customs.) Occasionally, ARCM has a few extra autoclaved shipping boxes available. Contact your animal facility supervisor.

4. If you need a health status letter or a USDA International Health Certificate (VS form 18-1) for a proposed shipment of animals, complete the Request Form for USDA Interstate and International Certificate of Health Examination and Fax it to 617-432-2438 to the attention of ARCM Veterinary Staff.

After the certificates have been prepared, an ARCM veterinarian will schedule an appointment with the PI staff to inspect the animals. There is a $50 health examination and certificate endorsing fee for this service. If warranted, the veterinarian will sign and give the form to the PI. The PI is responsibile for obtaining the USDA endorsement (see 5.) and including the appropriate copies in the shipment.
