Quarantine Services are required in order to bring any rodents to Harvard that are not obtained from an approved vendor. Each importation from colleagues or other academic institutions is a potential threat to the microbiological status of our colonies.

The risks of assuming clean health status in imported animals include the following:

  • Variable tolerance for and appreciation of the significance of enzootic infections in other institutions
  • Damage to shipping containers during transport and exposure to other shipments during transport
  • Accidents during packing of rodents at origin
  • Variable methods of exposure of sentinel animals to colony animals in supplier health monitoring programs
  • Variable (low) ratio of sentinels to colony animals at origin
  • Variable frequency/infrequency of health monitoring
  • Variability in health panels in routine use at other institutions
  • Miscommunication or misalignment of the actual animals shipped and the room or the health status of the room of origin
