Introduction
- Sterile
technique is a method of animal handling designed
to prevent contamination of the internal contents
by transmission between the outside environment and
other microisolator cages. Class II laminar flow hoods
establish a curtain of HEPA filtered air that prevents
contamination of the work area.
General
Instructions
- Since
any cage may theoretically be contaminated, in order
to provide maximum protection, manipulate only one
cage of animals in the work area at a time.
- Multiple
cages open in the work area of the hood increases
the chances of pathogen transmission between the animals
housed in those cages.
- Before
and between handling animal cages, use anti-viral
disinfectant (such as Quaternary ammonium) to spray
gloves, work surfaces, and implements (such as ear
punches) that come in contact with the animals.
