Investigarors are
responsible for acertaing that all biological materials used
in the animal faciliteies are free of biological contamination.
This is done by submitting an aliquot of the cell line or
biological material to a vendor who will test by any
of a variety of methods for the presence of the agents
listed. These tests must demonstrate negative results
before they are used in animals in the animal facilities.
Cell lines must be tested every 2 years thereafter while in
routine use. Several methods can provide acceptable results
in these tests.
Send a copy of
the original laboratory report to the ARCM diagnostic lab.
Materials from
the ATCC are not tested or warranted for biological contamination.
Materials to be
tested prior to use in rodents include transplantable tumor
lines, serum and monoclonal antibodies produced in rodents.
Primary tissues must originate from barrier animals only.
Properly screened
biological materials may enter the barrier facility using
the routine decontamination procedures. Animals receiving
these materials are to be housed using full microisolator
technique including the use of a type II biosafety laminar
flow change station.
Obtain advance
approval from the Associate Director for Animal Care for any
necessary change in housing biosecurity.
Obtain laboratory
requisition forms and fax copies of the results to the ARCM
Diagnostic Laboratory at 617-432-2438.
